Tyler Wells with back injury ends up leaving the game (O’s lose 6-4, updated)

Tyler Wells has been on a strict pitch and inning count this season, and the Orioles want to see him finish the season as a starter without suspending him. Push a little first, then pull back. Keep calm where you can find it.

They didn’t want to hurt its use, but it happened tonight.

Wells threw a slider to Tampa Bay’s Yandy Díaz to start the bat in the fifth inning with an out, twisting his torso slightly, grimacing, and at the waist bending. Rough smells put an arm on his shoulder as manager Brandon Hyde, pitching coach Chris Holt and head athletics coach Brian Ebel rushed to the mound.

The club announced Wells had low back pain. The Orioles got 4 2/3 scoreless innings from the bullpen in regulation, but lost 6-4 after the Rays scored twice in the 10th.

Jorge Mateo hit a game-changing home run by Colin Poche in the ninth. Adleyrutschman had two outs and Trey Mancini overcame Poche, who gave up a two-run homer by Ramón Urías in the eighth round last night. Anthony Santander strikes out.

The Rays made a back-up on Jorge López in the 10th inning and Randy Arozarena delivered two runs in right field. Home strength and doubles prevent further damage.

Pete Fairbanks stepped out of the Rays’ flammable bullpen with no running allowed.

The Orioles are back at .500 with a 49-49 run, but remain in fourth place.

Hyde and Wells said the pitcher also had discomfort on one side and he will be reassessed in the morning. The right-hander is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list.

“I’d say the odds are pretty good,” Hyde said.

“It’s unfortunate. I’m hoping for the best and we’ll see. I don’t want to make any judgments right now, but I’m hoping for the best. This is someone we try to be careful with throughout the year. Sometimes you can have some people Can’t control things.”

Wells’ next move is Monday in Texas, and the Orioles can look in multiple directions for a replacement, whether it’s promoting No. 4 DL Hall, recalling Kyle Bradish or Bruce Zimmerman, or Matt. Contract selected by Harvey from Triple-A Norfolk.

Hall started last night and only lasted 2/3 of the inning. Harvey is scheduled for Thursday.

An oblique injury would be much more serious, but the back would still put Wells on the back burner and force the team to change lineups. The Orioles can develop a reliever until they need a starter.

Wells’ 20 starts are tied to most of the club’s veterans, Jordan Lyles. His 94 2/3 innings far surpassed his 57 in 2021.

“I’ve been tight lately, all the way down to my hips and back, so I’ve been working on the mobility stuff and keeping everything in order. I guess nothing out of the ordinary. I’m not a starter, haven’t pitched that much in three years so it must be my body getting used to the general workload again, but that’s all part of it.

Wells would not object to its removal. He knew the seriousness of the situation.

“I was out and things happened and I thought, ‘Oh, it’s not feeling well,'” he said. “I don’t want to keep trying to test it because I know you see it a lot with other people. An extra, it just irritates it, I want to make sure I stay up to date and don’t really get to the point where I make it worse to the point of.”

Wells had never had an oblique injury and had no idea where the pain around him came from.

“I’ve never had a serious lower back injury or anything like that,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll find out more in the morning.”

Mateo tried to ease the pain of Wells’ loss by tying the game in the ninth.

“Great achievement, it’s great to see him get through it there,” Hyde said. “It was nice to see him hitting the ball the other way. It was a beautiful beating. On a night when I felt like we were really getting kicked out of the box, it was nice to see him hit a big one in the ninth inning. The home run tied the game.”

“We’ve been focused on continuing to find ways to help the team win and do what we can,” Matteo said through interpreter Brandon Quinos. “Fortunately, I hit that ball on the home run, but unfortunately, things didn’t go our way tonight.”

Dillon Tate briefly replaced Wells, succeeding Josh Lowe at second base, and Diaz had a double inside the right corner of the field. Tate knocked out the next two batters.

Wells was charged with four hits and six hits in 4 1/3 innings, with no walks, five strikeouts and two homers in his 69 pitches. His ERA went from 3.69 to 3.90.

In his last four games, Wells had 15 carries and 23 hits in 19 innings.

The experiment to turn Wells back into a starter has been put on hold after last year as a late-release character in Rule 5. Whether it will stop in 2022 remains to be seen.

“It’s something you never want to see playing a game, but it’s part of the game and it happens,” Mateo said. “Very sad to see. Now we are just praying to God that all is well and nothing bad.”

Wells had an unusual first inning that cost him two points.

Díaz led with a single and doubled from first after Cedric Mullins shut down Brandon Lowe’s fly ball. Arozarena singles, Ji-Man Choi leads 2-0 in the Orioles bullpen.

The Rays lead the Grand Slam on the bases. That’s why.

Mullins finished his career with his seventh outfield assist and was linked with Austin Hayes to lead the team. No other club in the majors has two players and seven players.

Luke Raley led the second by also firing a fastball that cleared the midfield fence.

The Orioles were great in Games 2 and 3, but not so much in Game 4.

Santander and Ryan Moncastle In Game 2, Santander used Hayes’ flyball to quickly get into right field to third base, and he used Otto’s single to cut the lead to 3-1.

Mountcastle made the switch and finished third on a fly ball to Urías’ right side, but Mateo was out.

Rutschman struck out in the third and Mancini was gone. TRUCKMAN took Santander’s fly ball into the right field for third and scored in the wild.

Trailing 3-2 in the fourth quarter, the Orioles tried to bounce back on Odor’s single. Odor attempted to put two bases on Urías’ helicopter for third, and it came out 5-3-6.

Drew Rasmussen hit his OSU teammate The Truckers with two outs in the fifth and Mancini shot into right field for a 0-for-26 streak, The Truckers scored after Rayleigh’s throwing error. Santander was drilled in the left knee and Rasmussen was booed.

Jason Adam hit Hayes in the right wrist with two outs in the eighth, bringing more boos from the stands. Hayes stayed in the game, but was visibly frustrated and distressed.

After the third inning, the crowd was loudest when No. 1 overall pick Jackson Holliday came on the field for a video highlight and introduction.

Holiday signed his $8.19 million contract today as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Hyde finally saw him, he was standing behind the cage.

Hyde played Matt Holliday in A-ball and coached him in the majors.

“That’s the guy you don’t want to see running the bases in goal position,” Hyde said. “You know it’s going to be a 3-iron gap in right midfield.”

The Orioles gained momentum from a one-point deficit in the seventh inning. Mateo made the next Orioles by grabbing an infield hit, hitting Mullin’s fly ball and advancing to center. He was stuck at third base.

Nick Vespi trailed Tate 1 1/3 innings scoreless, Tate hit a 3 and went 1 1/3 with no penalty. Félix Bautista ended the team with two strikeouts in the eighth, and Keegan Arkin ran a runner in the ninth to give the bullpen 14 1/3 in the series before the 10th inning No points.

Interest from other teams could make Chris Sale wear another shirt in 2023

Although no more serious negotiations have begun, the Boston Red Sox have noted the interest of other franchises in pitcher Chris Sale and have not ruled out involving him in a possible trade.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that while the Red Stockings are not thinking of trading any of their starters, they may at least listen and consider offers for the members of the rotation, due to many options in the sector.

However, if the team decides that Ace’s time in Boston is over, Sale can veto his fate and choose where he will go, since the no-trade clause in his contract gives him this possibility.

Should any team decide to take over the pitcher’s contract this offseason, they will secure his services for at least two more years, as Chris Sale becomes a free agent only in 2025.

Known for his excellent left-handedness, the athlete has a considerable history of physical problems. In addition to missing the entire already shortened 2020 season as a result of recovery from Tommy John surgery, Sale also took the field nine times the following year in uneven performances.

This season did not start in good shape for Sale either, who missed the start due to a rib injury during Spring Training. When he was healthy, he played only twice and fractured his little finger during an away game against the New York Yankees in July in his last performance. In addition, he broke his wrist riding a bicycle.

“You can’t make that up, right?” said Chaim Bloom, head of baseball operations for the Sox Kings. “We need to send some people after whoever is with Chris Sale’s voodoo doll and get it back.”

Sale was among the top six nominees for the Cy Young award between 2012 and 2018, receiving seven All-Star Game nominations, one World Series win, recording the record for unblemished innings with three (tied with Sandy Koufax and Max Scherzer) and owns a 5.33 strikeouts-to-walk average, the best mark in league history.

Taking into account his wins, but also the medical issue, Chris Sale will have to prove himself again as an elite pitcher who has made it through the injuries. If so, he is a powerful weapon on the mound, regardless of the uniform he wears.

Pirates sign veteran pitcher Rich Hill to a one-year deal

The Pittsburgh Pirates and left-handed pitcher Rich Hill finalized terms on a one-year, $8 million contract on Tuesday (27), reported Jeff Passan of ESPN USA.

Hill, 42, will be entering his 19th season in the MLB. He accumulated a 4.27 ERA with 109 strikeouts in 124.1 innings for the Boston Red Sox in 2022. Including, his last stint in Boston was his fourth with the team.

Since 2015, when the lefty had a “resurgence” period in his career, he has maintained an average of 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings, along with a good 2.91 ERA (140 ERA+) and a 1.06 WHIP in 87 total games.

The veteran pitcher has also played for the Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays, and New York Mets during his long career.

In addition to Hill, the Pirates have already signed Austin Hedges, Vince Velasquez, Jarlin Garcia, Carlos Santana, Connor Joe, and Ji-Man Choi this offseason.

The Mariners acquire Wong from the Brewers in exchange for Winker and Toro.

The Mariners acquired Kolten Wong from the Brewers on Friday in exchange for outfielder Jesse Winker and infielder Abraham Toro, filling a much-needed left-handed spot in their lineup.

DETAILS OF THE TRADE

  • 2B for the Mariners Kolten Wong
  • Brewers are awarded: LF/DH INF Jesse Winker Toro, Abraham.

The Mariners will also receive $1.75 million to help offset Wong’s $10 million salary in 2023, when he will be a free agent. Winker is due $8.25 million in his final year before free agency, effectively a money and player swap for Seattle, while Toro is in his first year of arbitration as a Super Two player and won’t be a free agent until until 2026.

Wong has been a Mariners goal since the team came short of signing him as a free agency ahead of the 2021 season, when Seattle offered a two-year deal but Milwaukee offered a third-year club option, which was the difference at the time, according to sources. The Mariners had inquired about Wong’s availability at the Trade Deadline the previous two seasons, but the competing Brewers were uninterested in moving him.

However, with numerous arbitration-eligible players set to receive raises this offseason, many in the business anticipated that the team might be willing to move some of its higher-priced players for payroll relief, prospect capital, and/or depth. Toro, a switch-hitting infielder with glimpses of good performance, provides longevity for the Brewers’ squad, while Winker, coming off a terribly disappointing season, returns to a division where he flourished with the Reds while facing the motivation of a contract year with the Brewers.

The Brewers activated Wong’s option last month instead of paying him a $2 million buyout, opening the door for him to be traded, which sparked interest from clubs other than Seattle, according to sources.

Wong, 32, is coming off what was maybe his greatest season at the plate, hitting.251/.339/.430 (.769 OPS) with a career-high 15 homers, 24 doubles, four triples, 47 RBIs, and 116 wRC+ (league average is 100) while collecting 2.5 wins above replacement, according to FanGraphs.

Some of this was by purpose, with a more deliberate attempt to raise the ball higher. His line-drive and fly-ball rates were the best in his career the last two years (49.3% combined), but his ground-ball percentage was the lowest (43.7% for ’21-22). It’s possible that his OPS+ in each of the last two seasons – 110 in ’21 and 118 in ’22 – was the greatest of his career.

Wong is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner who is coming off a defensively bad year in which he was worth minus-9 outs above average (placing in the third percentile, per Statcast) and minus-1 defensive runs saved.

Some of that could be attributed to lower-body injuries he battled throughout the year, such as a right calf strain from a hit-by-pitch in June, which led to a stint on the injured list and persisted despite treatment and footwear experimentation. A full offseason of rest and a Spring Training with infield coaching guru Perry Hill, who has helped J.P. Crawford and Ty France among others, should be beneficial.
