Tough for Kansas Jayhawks, other takeaways from Championship Classic

The Kansas Jayhawks ripped the Duke Blue Devils 3-0 this season in the Championship Classic and started answering some big questions in the process.

Before the team returns to action tonight, I want to take a moment to look at the key things we know about this franchise so far in this young season.

This team is already “hard”

It’s a quality Bill Self talks disgustingly about: whether a team is tough enough. These Jayhawks have certainly shown some resilience early in the season so far. We saw that spike against Duke, when Kansas’ huge first-half lead nearly evaporated at halftime, only to fall back by six midway through the second half.

But they were able to stop Duke’s momentum and then find the momentum they needed to regain the lead thanks to Grady Dick’s offensive spurt, which took the pressure off Jalen Wilson and allowed him to finish strong.

There are many vacancies

We knew at the beginning of the year that there would be a lot of positions and roles to be discovered, with a few starters moving on and a lot of carryovers with very limited experience, but I don’t know if we can really expect that.

It looks like Grady Dick has locked down the second primary scoring option for this offense, but as we’ve seen with Duke, he might not be efficient or trustworthy enough to make the big impact he needs. Kevin McCullar (more on him below) came in as a utility guy and did pretty much everything the Jayhawks needed, as did Wilson in the role last year, but I’m not sure he’s the best fit for the role. Questions remain about the second ball handler behind Dajuan Harris, whether it should be Bobby Pettiford or Joseph Yesufu (or both). Of course, the biggest question remains what to do with mail. KJ Adams has a role to play in that role, but Ernest Udeh seems to be struggling for a big season.

Kevin McCuller, we’ve barely scratched the surface

When McCullar arrived from Texas Tech, the consensus was that he would be a strong defender who could help lead the offense and hit the occasional 3, but it was hard to figure out what else to bring to the team. He’s obviously talking about his leadership and trying to perpetuate a winning culture in Kansas and all the other things you want to hear before the season.

But his performance against Duke allowed him to see a glimmer of possibility, to do a little bit of everything. He had six rebounds, including some in clutch time, to keep the game away from the Jayhawks. He had two assists and generally showed court vision that I wasn’t expecting. He has two blocks and is by far one of the best shot-blockers on the team. His shooting touch has been great to start the season. Overall, he’s probably an underrated role in the long run that seems to be a far cry from the one he’s known for at Texas Tech.

Jordan Geronimo flies through the air against Jackson State

Jordan Geronimo jumps out of the gym on Friday against Jackson State.

The Indiana junior forward stole a pass from Jackson State on the left wing and he started the game. Geronimo beat the defense down the court, holding up the Big Ten logo for a dunk.

Geronimo had four points, three rebounds and two assists as Indiana led 44-28 at halftime Friday.

The next game for the Indians could be the highly anticipated 2022-23 regular season. The nation’s No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels enter the conference hall at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. ET tips.

North Carolina is off to a 5-0 start but doesn’t look like a team that made it to the national championship game last year. Most recently, the Tar Heels went back and forth with Portland at the Phil Knight Invitational, winning 89-81. North Carolina also played Gardner-Webb at home on Nov. 15, winning 72-66. But with four starters from last year’s team and Northwestern transfer Pete Nance, the Tar Heels are sure to be a big challenge for the Indians.

Dick almost sets record as Kansas beats NC State 80-74

During the first half of Wednesday’s game against NC State, Grady Dick felt right at home on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. The Kansas freshman started his time at the Battle 4 Atlantis, hitting six 3-pointers in the first half and scoring 25 points in the game. The score is just one of the seven KU school halfcourt records set by Jeff Boschee in 2000.

The combination of Dick on offense and Dajuan Harris on defense kept Kansas steady in the first half while nothing else helped. KJ Adams was the one to put the Jayhawks on the board early, but KU struggled to get the ball and get inside early. Instead, the three-point line meant a lot to KU as the Jayhawks and Wolfpack punched each other. Along with Dick, Kevin McCuller and Jalen Wilson scored with 3 seconds to go as the shot clock ran out, and even Harris got involved as KU made it 9-14 in the first half from beyond the arc.

Harris’ 3-pointer gave Kansas a 33-27 lead, its biggest lead of the game at the time. But the wolves aren’t over yet. NCSU cut it to two before KU answered in the final two minutes of the first half. Harris passed the ball across the court and found Adams for an easy layup. Harris then attacked, and Dick hit a three-pointer at the end of the half, rewriting the score to 39-31.

Thanks to North Carolina, the Wolves struggled a lot. NCSU started the second half with an 8-0 score to tie the game at 39. Kansas again used the free throw line to separate. McCullar’s stunning save gave Ernest Udeh a layup, then North Carolina coach Kevin Keatt’s T’d up. Dick made two free throws, then was fouled on a 3-pointer and made all 3-pointers. Still, NCSU struggled to cut the score to 58-53.

Kansas was more aggressive in the second half and got to the free throw line with great speed. But so are wolves. They are very efficient. NC State is 12-12 on free throws and KU is 15-19 in under-8 timeouts. NCSU’s two free throws ended the game at 61. But the efficiency of the Wolf Pack will not last long.

For the next four minutes, the little boys had a blast. Bobby Pettiford and Adams grabbed big offensive rebounds and played wildly to keep the ball around before Harris got to work, getting around the Wolfpack’s big man.

Terquavion Smith missed NCSU’s first free throw with 3:32 left to keep the lead at 71-68 KU before Wilson made a driving layup and was fouled, but could only make one to keep the two-goal game alive. Then DJ Burns missed two free throws for the Wolves and Dick cost them with a reverse layup.

The KU defense quit at the end of the game. NC State scored its 67th point on its second-to-last field goal at 4:26 and didn’t make another shot until a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Despite shooting 56 percent from the line entering the game, Kansas went off the line with 22:29 to go against the Wolfpack.

Dick led all scorers with 25 points — he didn’t make another 3-pointer in the second half — while Wilson posted another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Harris performed well again, scoring 14 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. McCuller scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Indiana’s Trece Jackson-Davis turns for a layup against Miami, Ohio State

Indiana took an 8-3 lead over Miami, Ohio State early on Sunday thanks to Trece Jackson-Davis’ interior prowess.

Indiana freshman guard Jalen Hood Schifino made a nice pass to Jackson Davis down the middle of the paint. The Indiana State All-American forward caught the ball and spun it down the lane for two runs.

Jackson Davis was strong at Xavier Field on Friday, scoring 30 points in Indiana’s 81-79 victory.

Indiana’s next game is a 6:30 p.m. game against Little Rock. November 23rd ET at the Simon Skjodt Auditorium in Bloomington, Indiana. Little Rock is 3-1 on the season against Arkansas Baptist and has losses to Southern Illinois, Central Arkansas and East Tennessee. The Trojans play Jackson State on Sunday night.
