Mel Tucker addresses the Xavier Henderson situation – Michigan State
Michigan State kicked off the 2022 season with a 35-14 win over West Michigan on Friday night, but the victory was somewhat hampered by two injuries on the Spartans’ defense.
Starting safety Xavier Henderson and starting linebacker Darius Snow both left the game in the second quarter and did not return.
Photographer Adam Ruff provided an eyewitness account of Snow’s second half, noting that the junior was in a wheelchair with a towel over his head and face.

In addition, several witnesses reported that Henderson walked on crutches while wearing civilian clothes in the second half, with a splint on his right leg. Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press captured video of Henderson walking on crutches and braces after the game.

Head coach Mel Tucker did not specify an update on Snow or Henderson’s post-game press conference, saying: “I have nothing to give you right now. I’ll know more tomorrow, maybe by the end of the week. One time or so, when I’m with you again, I can give you more. Maybe not, we’ll just have to see.”
Tucker is understandably not very candid about injury status or concerns, but if Michigan State expects Henderson and/or Snow to miss important time, the head coach could make an announcement next week.
Tucker was pleased with his defense’s response to losing two starters in the first half of the season opener, especially the way the Spartans communicated on that side of the ball.
“I don’t see a lot of dropped communications out there,” Tucker said. “I saw the attitude of the people on site, Scotty got the call early so they could line up for information and then have time to communicate.
“It’s a next-man mentality. You don’t know when your number is going to be called. You have to be prepared and ready to go out there and make those calls.”
Tucker also said that without Henderson and Snow, defensive coordinator Scotty Hazelton doesn’t have to limit his defensive play at all. Michigan State relies on players on the field to line up correctly and adapt to Western Michigan’s athleticism and uneven formation.
“I talked to you guys during training camp to get everyone ready and make sure we’re all working hard so if their numbers are called they can play and we can keep playing football,” Tucker said.
“This is important. We saw this in the team a year ago. When players go down, players need to be able to step up and be efficient so we can continue to play and win.”
Along with Hazelton, Tucker praised secondary coach Harlon Barnett’s work at DBs.
“Coach Barnett did a great job with the defenders. Scotty did a great job with the supporters,” the head coach said.
“We’re a communication defender. Everyone talks. That’s how it works in practice, we talk in meetings. The game comes and the players call in meetings. It’s not just the starting lineup, there are two and Three. That’s it.”
If Henderson and Snow miss important minutes, it would be a major blow to Michigan State’s defense.
The Spartans have a lot of depth as a linebacker, but Snow is someone who will hopefully help the Michigan State linebacker with pass coverage, and his side-to-side speed will be missed.
Meanwhile, no player on this team has played more than Henderson, Michigan State’s best safety to date. As the Spartans struggled with passing coverage a year ago, losing the senior captain only exacerbated the problem.
Tucker will speak to the media early Monday afternoon, when more information about Snow and Henderson is likely to be available.
