After years of research by the FIA ​​to find ways to better protect drivers’ heads in open-cockpit races, the halo is a must for Formula 1 in 2018. While the concept is relatively simple, a titanium rod on a rider’s helmet, it has proven to be very effective, protecting riders from serious injury and, in some cases, death several times since its inception.

That said, the sport’s governing body, the FIA, is always looking for ways to improve safety, and Zhou’s crash on the first lap at Silverstone was no exception. As with all major accidents, the FIA ​​will conduct a full investigation into the incident to see how safety can be improved in future races.

While the FIA ​​has yet to indicate the focus of the investigation or when it will end, there are two clear areas of concern following Sunday’s accident.

The first is where Zhou’s car stopped. After being tipped over as a result of contact with George Russell, Alfa Romeo skidded headfirst across the tarmac runway, then dug into the gravel behind and rolled over the tire guard. The final point of the crash throws the car from the guardrail designed to absorb the shock onto the safety fence behind.

The safety fence did a great job of keeping the car from flying into areas close to the marshal’s post, photographers and stands, but when it stopped Zhou’s car, it also fell into a narrow gap behind the tire fence. Trapped between tire guards and safety fences, rescuers struggled to free Zhou from the wreckage, which would be even more worrying if the Chinese driver was seriously injured in the accident or the car caught fire.

Russell, who got out of the car in the finals and ran to check Zhou, said the sport needs to learn from Sunday’s accident about the placement of crash barriers and fencing.

“It’s horrible, he’s stuck there in that position, [there] he can’t do anything,” Russell said. “We have to think about avoiding cars getting stuck in such narrow gaps.

“The space between the barrier and the metal fence, it’s just stuck there and has nowhere to go. Yes, he can learn something from it.”

Another big problem is that there are no anti-roll bars when the car is stopped. The anti-roll bars located behind the cockpit are mandatory for all F1 cars and must withstand 60 kN lateral, 70 kN longitudinal and 105 kN vertical forces to pass the crash tests required by the car. In theory, the anti-roll bars are designed to absorb any impact when the vehicle rolls over, while leaving enough room to protect the driver’s head.

However, in Zhou’s accident, the car’s anti-roll bars appeared to be ripped off as it slid across the track, meaning the only thing protecting Zhou’s head was the halo. In this case, part of the FIA’s investigation could focus on whether changes could be made to the anti-roll bars to strengthen them, since Zhou would be trapped inside if the car came to a stop upside down.

The fact that Zhou and Alex Albon themselves were involved in a further major accident in which they survived is a testament to the FIA’s process of investigating every major accident in F1 and Subsequent learning outcomes. As with the accident that led to the Halo launch, the lessons learned from Zhou’s accident at Silverstone could save lives in the future.

Russell threatens at the start

With two regular points from Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon, France are already 24 points ahead of McLaren – just like this season, with Lando Norris taking all the heavy lifting and Daniel Rie Cardo continued to struggle.

But aside from the drivers, Alpine thinks there’s a lot in the A522 car that allows them to take home an advantage against McLaren.

“We’ve been working hard for years before these regulations started to apply new technology to our cars,” said Alpine’s technical director Matt Harman, as quoted by Motorsport.com.

“It gave us a very strong backbone, a good car frame. There’s very effective technology out there.

“This allows us to focus on our aerodynamic requirements and our mechanical performance characteristics to ensure we can make progress, so we’re in a good position at the moment.”

Focusing on aerodynamics from the start leaves a lot of room for improvement, Harman said.

“The original intention of our car this year was that we just wanted to make sure it was aero,” he said. “It’s about making sure every aspect of the car supports or facilitates air flow. We did that.

“Every technology we put into the car is designed to ensure that we give our aerodynamicists the best possible opportunity to express themselves.

“And I think you can see that there’s nothing holding us back as aerodynamicists. What’s limiting us at the moment is just our own ideas. So that’s an important idea, and I think it’s going to keep us going.”

Alpine sporting director Alan Perlman believes the working harmony between the team’s bases in England and France has also improved.

“Matt really spent a lot of time at Viry (Renault’s F1 engine base) and worked closely with these people,” said Permane.

“On the track we’ve always had a good relationship with them. I suspect in the distant past we might have felt guilty for being two teams, or they said it was the drive unit. It’s not like that anymore.

“It wasn’t designed by Enstone at all. But it was designed in collaboration with them, of course in terms of construction, where the parts are going, etc., so it’s a very strong relationship.”
